Instrument Identification and Kicking
National PE Standard: 1, Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities
National Music Standard: 6, Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
Equipment: Polyspots and balls for PE; pictures of orchestral instruments and a recording of Peter and the Wolf for music
Lesson Focus: Kicking a rolling ball for PE; identifying instruments for music
Related Literature: I know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello by Barbara S. Gabriel
PE Activity: Review kicking technique with your students. Divide the students into groups of 3 or 4 students. Have the students practice kicking a rolling ball from about 15 feet away. Have a student be a pitcher and another a kicker. Rotate student positions after each turn.
Music Activity: Tell the students the story of Peter and the Wolf. Play the music for them. Show them different pictures of each instrument as it plays. Ask them to tell you if the instrument is playing high or low. Have them move dramatically to Peter and the Wolf.
